The liver is the central organ of the entire metabolism. It is closely linked to glucose, fat and protein metabolism. Nutrients that are absorbed from the intestines into the blood reach the liver via the portal vein and are metabolised there; the end products are then either released into the blood or removed from the blood. Thus, the liver has a special need for a wide range of micronutrients. With regard to their liver metabolism, cats have some special characteristics. For example, they have a significantly higher protein requirement (both in terms of quantity and quality) because they cannot reduce their protein synthesis due to ongoing transaminase activity. Taurine is particularly important because cats can only conjugate taurine with bile acids.
